Today, Assistant Editor Laura van den Berg, author of What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us, shares her anticipated fiction picks for 2010:
Stations West by Allison Amend (LSU, March 2010). I loved Amend’s debut collection, Things That Pass For Love (OV Books, 2008), and can’t wait to check out her historical novel from LSU’s Yellow Shoe Fiction Series.
Boys and Girls Like You and Me by Aryn Kyle (Scribner, 2010). After reading Kyle’s story “Allegiance” in Best American Short Stories, I was hooked and couldn’t wait to read her second book, after the stellar novel The God of Animals.
How to Escape From a Leper Colony by Tiphanie Yanique (Graywolf, March 2010). Praised as “fiction of the first rank” by Ben Fountain, this debut collection is sure to be stellar.
Everything Here is the Best Thing Ever by Justin Taylor (Harper, February 2010). Of Taylor’s work, Padgett Powell says, “There is a debt paid to Donald Barthelme…and a strange undertow of Philip Roth, which makes for a new literary beast.” That alone was enough for me to add this debut collection to my “to read” list.
